Choubou TABOU COMBO~ June 21, 2008

Tabou Combo demonstrated why they were celebrating their 40th Anniversary tonight. In an industry that can sometimes be extremely fickle, Tabou Combo endures the test of time.

Tabou Combo, led by Shou Bout gave the crowd everything they came for and more here in Atlanta on June 21, 2008.  The energy was electric, the passion between the audience of all ages and the band members was unmistakable and their ability to move the crowd was undeniable! Even people like myself, admittedly who has never had the pleasure of experiencing a real life Kompa concert could not help tapping my toes to the infectious melodies.  I needed to dance despite not understanding what the lyrics said.  Tabou Combo are master entertainers and that transcends language and cultural barriers; is it a wonder that they have endured 40 years?

Tabou Combo packed the dance floor and moved the crowd effortlessly.  It was wonderful to see people of such varied ages dancing side by side, yet clearly in their own world, as the music holds a special meaning to each and everyone present.

I was fortunate to be invited to interview the lead singer, Shou Bou.  This interview allowed me to gather even more insight into the longevity of a music that is admittedly new to me as well.  This band has toured all over the world to warm receptions and love.  Speaking to Shou Bou, is magnetic charm and charisma were obvious factors in why so many gravitated to Tabou Combo.  However, it was clear while listening to the music what kept them coming back. The love of the music, the way it made you feel kept audiences around the world coming back for more.  This is a new love affair for me too like so many other making up the Caribbean Diaspora.  I am proud to be a part of this love affair, despite language and cultural differences. I suggest that you don’t just take my word for it, go to www.taboucombo.com  and find out for yourself, I know you will be hooked too.

Krezi Krezi Mizik Tabou Combo was accompanied by Krezi Mizik, a young Kompa band who’s lead singer, Michael Benjamin, known adoringly as Mika by friends and fans alike, is both easy on the eyes and full of charisma.  Before Krezi took to the stage I had an opportunity to interview Krezi Mizik’s lead singer.  In an age where it seems every artist is making a remake or “crossing over” Mika mentioned that Krezi has no interest in that.  Although they are a young, hip Kompa band, they respect and want to up hold the traditional style of the music.  He said, “Collaborating is fine, and maybe I would do that on my own but Krezi will remain true to the music.”

Once the band started playing, it was magic.  The crowd went nuts when they covered a song by a more seasoned Kompa artist. They equally lost their minds when this hip, young band brought the lead singer of Tabou Combo up on the stage and sang a special tribute song to him.  It was clear to see that to Krezi Mizik, respect is a very important thing.

The dance floor was packed, the crowd was receptive and everyone could see that Krezi Mizik was a hit! Krezi brought the energy and the crowd loved it. The true testament to their ability was the fact that although they performed after the headlining act, Tabou Combo, they kept the party flowing and left the stage with the crowd wanting more.
There was definite love for Krezi tonight, and if this is any indication, I know their tour will be a wildly successful one.
